Colleagues,

August may be one of the most important months of the year for youth development.

Research on youth development and summer learning points to the transition between summer and the start of a new school year as a critical period in a young person's development. During times of transition, youth are especially receptive to building confidence, shaping their identity, setting goals, and establishing new habits. What happens during these final weeks of summer can influence how they enter the school year academically, socially, and emotionally.

That is why August matters.

For Minnesota 4-H, August is not simply the end of summer programming. It is the month when young people connect the experiences they have had through camps, fairs, local showcases, community projects, and leadership opportunities to their future aspirations. They return with new skills, stronger relationships, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of belonging.

As you lead August programs and experiences, know that your work comes at a pivotal time. You are helping young people carry the momentum of summer into the school year ahead and supporting them as they take the next step in becoming Beyond Ready.
