Build strong volunteer systems: Recognition strategies

For educators

Effective volunteer recognition has been proven to enhance volunteer retention and satisfaction. And despite the myths, it doesn’t need to be overly complicated.

As you turn the page on one 4-H year and leap into another, we encourage you to consider where you can show recognition or lift up the recognition given by youth and families.

Getting started

  • Consider the time you have available, and who you want to reach out to. Even making small contributions is a sign of your intention.
  • As a suggestion, focus on recognizing new volunteers stepping into a role, or a volunteer who has contributed time and talents in a positive way.

Use a variety of strategies

Nominate shining volunteers for the Northern Lights recognition

Northern Lights is a statewide volunteer recognition opportunity designed to celebrate volunteer impact across the 4-H program. Regardless of how volunteers have served, or what area of the program they contribute to, we want to shine a light on the inspiring work done through volunteers.

The nomination process can be completed in about 15 minutes and all eligible Northern Lights nominees will also be considered for the National 4-H Salute to Excellence award. Nominate a volunteer or group of volunteers who bring light to their local program and community today! Nomination deadline: Jan. 21, 2025.
